Notable Outdoor Sculpture in Texas and the Old South

Two nights of visual encounters as a historical study as well as a travel discussion. David Smith’s presentation will include his comments on artist and time periods found represented in stone and metal.

Beginning Knitting

Would you like to learn how to knit? What a great time to knit during cold winter days. Join this class if you are a beginner or if you already know how to knit and would like to learn new pattern stitches. Supplies: size 7 needle and cotton yarn.

Knitting – Cabled Sit-on Seat Cushion

Join this class as you will make a cable knit seat pad perfect for picnics or seating in bleachers during outdoor sporting events. Supplies: size 7, 24” long circular needles, cable needle, 3 skeins yarn (210 yards/4oz 2 ply) can be wool or acrylic or bring your own project to work on.

Cake Decorating

Learn basic cake baking and decorating skills. Each night will have a unique theme: Cake Basics, Birthday Extravaganza, Spring Fling and Create-a-Cupcake. Students should bring a 9-inch by 13-inch cake for the first class.

Beginning Quilting

This is a great time of year for indoor sewing projects. Learn how to piece a quilt, just like your grandmother made. You will learn by machine or by hand - your choice. You will learn making a 16-inch pillow top square. Supplies needed: ¾ yard backing fabric, ¾ yard batting, ¼ yard muslin, ¾ yard assorted colored fabrics- student’s choice, quilting needles, quilting thread, regular thread, sewing machine if preferred.

Chairside Basket

This basket (7x12x14) sits next to you, so fill it up with magazines, knitting, sewing or anything you like and still take it with you. Hand-carved oak handle and legs. You will learn all the basic weaves with this basket.

Kids in the Kitchen – Cupcake Creations Ages 5-12

Back by popular demand. Students will once again create deliciously cute creatures from the simple cupcake in the Marvin cooking room.

Kids In the Kitchen – “Cooking Up A Story” Ages 5-9

Each month students will gather in the Marvin library to hear stories from favorite authors and then we will proceed to the Marvin cooking room to “cook up” snacks related to the stories. Stories will involve the following topics: Week 1 – Winter Fun., Week 2 -Texas, Our Texas, Week 3 – Going Buggy, Week 4 – Dig Those Dinosaurs.

Learn to Play the Guitar

Come join us for this fun beginner’s class. In this five-week study we will learn the basics of guitar playing including tuning, chording, strumming and some basic study techniques to continue with once the course is over. Bring your own guitar. Students will need shorter fingernails in order to play effectively. Age limit 13 and older.

Getting Started With Roses

This class will begin with an introduction to rose culture; including site selection, soil preparation and plant selection. Common insects and diseases and their control will be discussed along with pesticide safety. Water requirements, fertilizer, dead-heading and pruning will also be covered.

 Vegetable Gardening 101

In this class you will learn the basics of vegetable gardening. Topics will include how to plan your new garden, the best location for your garden, how to condition your soil to grow healthy vegetables and so much more. The class will also include a list of the best vegetable varieties to plant in Ellis County and when to plant them.

Basic Digital Photography

Did you get a new digital camera for Christmas or do you have one you’ve never learned to use properly? Join Neal White as you learn the basics of digital photography in simple, non-technical terms, as well as a brief overview of downloading pictures into the computer and making color corrections.
