Global High School held its fifth annual “Quest Fest” for all new incoming students for the 2011-2012 school year.

The event was hosted and staffed by current Global High School students.

The GHS student council members planned and organized the event that was attended by more than 200 students and their families.

The student council, under the direction of social studies teacher Andrea Kline, prepared for the event over the entire summer.  The council recruited 60 student volunteers from Global to teach newcomers various collaboration strategies and to model successful implementation of project based learning practices.

The exercises required students to innovate a new product with limited supplies and resources.  The day of learning activities wrapped up with a competition that granted bragging rights to the team that designed a “weather manipulator.”

The exciting event ended with a hot dog supper for new students, their families and staff.  The Global High School PTO organization sponsored the meal and prepared 700 hot dogs along with drinks and snacks to feed the hungry crowd.

The evening proved to be a great ice breaker to introduce new students to the Global High School culture that they will be experiencing for the rest of their high school years.

This year is already proving to be a record breaking year for Global High School.

The student body has doubled in size and almost reached its school capacity, while the staff has also increased with many new teachers joining the innovative educational institution.

Every department has grown and increased in new opportunities for both the students and staff.  One such opportunity includes the introduction of Nooks into the English classrooms.

The Nooks will allow teachers and students to utilize the new electronic digital library that is now available to all WISD students.

The new technology gets “books” in student’s hands in a format that speaks to their generation.

GHS will also be embracing today’s 2.0 Web Design options that make education in the 21st century engaging and enticing for students as well as the teachers.

The excitement is spilling over in every “Nook” and cranny at Global High School as the world of technology continues to deliver new educational experiences.

The GHS family is ready and willing to jump in and embrace everything this school year has to offer.

Stay tuned for the contributions of the next generation of innovators from Global High School.
