Borrowing the title from a recent block-buster movie, The Oaks Fellowship of Red Oak has launched a campaign known as Friday Night Lights –  to showcase local school teams and coaches through tailgate parties and special recognitions in Sunday worship services.

The event began on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 16 and 18, and continues each weekend through Oct. 7-9.

Tiffany Walters, family life director for the Oaks Fellowship, explains the details.

“In our worship services we’re just taking time to honor teams and coaches in the area,” Walters said. “We want to honor coaches for their commitment to the communities where they live and to their commitment to mentor young athletes.”

According to a press release by church representative Brandy Fields, a “Breakfast for Champions” is being hosted at the different Life Schools to honor community leaders.

“We do (these) at the school that is being highlighted for a particular week,” Fields said that it is served on Friday morning of each game – and a tailgate party that consists of bounce houses, Christian music and face painting prior to each game.

“Prior to the game that we are spotlighting, we hand out 500 shirts and sell tickets to the game which everyone wears to that game. Then on Sunday we have a 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. service, honoring community leaders, school leaders, football coaches and players, band members, cheerleaders during a 20 minute segment of our service,” Brandy Fields said.

In connection with the emphasis, a $3,000 “Act Normal”  scholarship will be awarded to a student at Life Schools, Waxahachie High School, Midlothian High School and Red Oak High School, known as the Act Normal Scholarship, based on The Oaks Fellowship pastor, Scott Wilson’s new book, Act Normal.

“The book deals with the need for Christians to simply act normal as they are going about their daily routine – and by acting normal, that means to show love to people as a normal way of life,” Walters explained.

Scholarships will be based on scholarship, athletics, community service and moral character.
