More than 10 youth and adults from Ferris Heights United Methodist Church in Waxahachie recently returned from a week of service in South Central Texas.
They plan to share their experiences Aug. 21 at FHUMC during an appreciation dinner after church; the public is invited to attend.
Working with Central Texas Conference Youth in Mission, a ministry of the United Methodist Church, the group spent July 17-22 helping build wheelchair ramps for the elderly and disabled. The group will share pictures and stories from their week of service.
“We had more than 70 people split into nine teams of approximately seven people each and were able to build 10 wheelchair ramps in four days of work. The average length of the ramps being built was 20 feet. These were junior high kids doing projects that are normally done on the senior high trips. These kids are just amazing,” youth director Shannon Goretska said.
CTCYM has served communities in and around Texas since 1993. This summer, more than 100 church groups participated in a week of service at one of 30 CTCYM Living Centers. These groups spent the week repairing, making improvements and rebuilding homes weathered by age, poverty or natural disaster. The work they do each day is supported each day by activities, devotionals and evening worship.
The youth and the adults who were able to go on this trip plan to make the trip again next year. Rhiannon Mutulo, one of the youth attending, said when asked about her experience, “At first our client, a Vietnam vet who is an amputee, didn’t talk much to us, but by the end of the week he was becoming a part of our group and was very grateful for the work we had done, said Rhiannon Mutulo, one of the participating youth.
“These kids will never know what seeds they have planted in the lives of their clients and their neighbors. The great thing is that we often come away being blessed just as much or more than the client has been,” said Deborah Green, an adult attending the trip.
The group plans to use their newfound skills to begin a wheelchair ramp ministry in Waxahachie.
