The Hope Clinic will host a weight loss support group where attendees can learn to change their health, get in shape, shed extra pounds, live a healthier lifestyle, increase energy, be well and cut the risk of developing diabetes, heart attack, stroke and cancer.

Sessions will be held  May 21. Sessions will be an hour long and will begin at 10 a.m. If you would like a confidential weigh-in and measurements come about 9:50.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for this active time.

There is no charge.

Waxahachie Care

Waxahachie Care is a community food pantry that helps those in need and emergency situations with food, utilities and gas, and also helps the elderly with special needs. The nonprofit agency is located at 609 Kaufman St. in Waxahachie.  The hours of operation are from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday. Call 972-923-2273 for information.

Proposed closure

The U.S. Postal Service is proposing the closure of the Avalon post office.

Residents are encouraged to attend a USPS-led community meeting at 2 p.m. June 1 at the post office.

Sims Summer Reading for Adults

Why let the kids have all the fun? Read or listen to any book, audiobook, or ebook from Nicholas P. Sims Library to enter a weekly drawing for a $25 gift card for merchandise or restaurant meals, donated by the Friends of Sims Library and local businesses. The adult that turns in the most reading log entries by Saturday, Aug. 20 will win the grand prize, a color eReader, donated by Best Buy Waxahachie. The grand prize winner will be announced at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 at Sims Library.

Vendors and sponsors needed

The Waxahachie Lions Club will host the annual Mini Grand Prix on the downtown square on Saturday, July 16. The races feature Indy-style go-carts on a challenging course with hairpin turns and lots of spills and thrills.

Applications are available for food vendors (city permit required), craft vendors, and informational booths from non-profit organizations and others. Booth spaces are limited; electrical service is available for food vendors. Non-profit organizations will not be charged a fee. The races draw a large crowd and will run from about 7:30 a.m. until around 3 p.m.

The Lions Club is also seeking sponsors for the event from businesses and individuals, with proceeds benefiting the Hope Clinic, college scholarships and many other causes.

Vendors needed

The annual Mid-Way Regional Airport’s Pancake Breakfast and Fly-In will take place from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, June 4. Applications are now being accepted for vendor space. Vendor fees are $60 for a 10-foot by 10-foot booth with a six-foot table, two chairs and two breakfast tickets. The event is expected to draw from 800-900 people. All booths are outside and electricity is not available. Vendors may bring a canopy, but will be responsible for setting it up and weighting it down in case of wind. Nonprofit organizations are welcome free of charge, but will be responsible for their own setups. No food or drink sales will be allowed.

Attractions include classic airplanes and fighters, flour drop, spot landing contests, helicopter rides, remote control model flyers, Midlothian Classic Wheels, Gold Wing Road Riders Club, kids trackless train and face painting.

Birth Mom Support Group

The Texas Baptist Home exists to protect the sanctity of human life and to promote the preservation of the family. As a part of the fulfillment of this mission, TBH wishes to serve birth mothers of adopted children. Women in any stage of life after placing are welcome and those women who have overcome the struggles that come when placing a child for adoption are encouraged to be a help and encouragement to younger birth moms. If you or someone you know is a birth mom and would like to be strengthened by the bond of common ground and experiences, attend monthly meetings as we come together monthly to share, grow, heal, and laugh.

Meetings are held the third Thursday of the month with the next one at 7 p.m. June 16 at the Daniel Center at the Texas Baptist Home, 629 Farley St. in Waxahachie.

Veterans Networking Group to meet

The Veterans Networking Group meets at 6 p.m. the third Friday of every month at Zula’s Coffee House, 1804 W. Highway 287 Business next to the Texas Workforce office.

The next gathering is scheduled for June 17.

The group usually meets until 8 p.m. giving veterans a place to come and enjoy camaraderie, discuss most any topic, share what’s on their mind and as a networking group, try to assist by providing support, ideas, and solutions to their concerns/needs.

Zoo’s Wild Wonders at Sims Library

The Fort Worth Zoo presents Wild Wonders at the Nicholas P. Sims Library, from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1. Wild Wonders features a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals in a program that is both entertaining and educational for ages 4 -10.

“Come experience this interactive and up-close wildlife event as the Fort Worth Zoo kicks off the first of many Texas Reading Club activities for children offered this summer at the Sims Library,” a spokesman said.

Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Information

Sherry Jones, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, presents an information session on diabetes from 10 a.m.-noon on June 2 in the Nicholas P. Sims Library program room. Learn the latest facts and resources on preventing and treating diabetes. Take home helpful hand-outs. The library is located at 515 W. Main in Waxahachie. All Sims Library programs are free admission to the public.

Doll house program at Sims Library

Walking and exercise

Take advantage of having a certified personal trainer to provide general fitness tips and walk with you during the Walks-a-hachie walking class. Class will meet at the large pavilion in Getzendaner Park from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.

Casting call for ‘Once a Pawn a Time’

“Once a Pawn a Time” is a 4-H Living Chess Production: Theater in the Round. It’s a fun story line with eye catching costumes that will be played at area libraries. The schedule is 6:30 p.m. June 7 at the Red Oak Library; 10:30 a.m. June 8 at the Cedar Hill Library and 10 a.m. June 10 at Nicholas P. Sims Library in Waxahachie. Child actors ages 8-18 are needed. Flexible rehearsals are held 4-6 p.m. in Red Oak and Waxahachie.

Tech Petting Zoo on eReaders  at Sims

Nicholas P. Sims Library now offers free ebook lending to library cardholders.

A hands on ereader petting zoo, including library ebook downloading information, will be held from 9:30 a.m.-1p.m.  Tuesday, June 7, and from 5-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in the program room, located at 515 W. Main, Waxahachie.

Drop by this free event for demonstrations and comparisons of the many ereaders now available.

Tour d’ Italia

The Tour d’ Italia, held each year in Italy, Texas, is slated for June 18 in Italy.

This is the 26th annual bicycle tour sponsored by the Lone Star Cyclists and has routes from 12 to 63 miles.

Arts and crafts and other vendor booths also are set up as part of the event.

Writing for Enjoyment group to meet

Writing for Enjoyment will meet July 5 at the Red Oak United Methodist Church.

Medicare Savings Program offered

Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties, in conjunction with the North Central Texas Area on Aging, hopes to reach Medicare eligible clients who may need assistance with prescription drug coverage.

The Medicare Savings Program is geared to reach Medicare recipients who are financially eligible.

Friends of Sims Library Cookbook

The Friends of Nicholas P. Sims Library are organizing a fundraising cookbook to supplement the Friends’ membership dues for ongoing library expenses that are not met in the library’s budget.

Ellis County cooks are invited to share favorite recipes to include in the book.

Help Sims continue to offer the public special events and materials for all ages. Recipe forms are available at the library and on the library website, www.simslib.org.

The completed forms may be mailed or delivered to Sims Library, 515 W. Main, Waxahachie, Texas 75165.

The Midlothian Area Historical Society is seeking old photos of Midlothian.

Scholarship account in memory of Shelley Nance

A benefit account has been set up at Citizens National Bank to establish the Shelley Nance Memorial Art Scholarship that will be given to a deserving graduate of Italy High each year. Nance, who passed away Sept. 11, 2009, was a 2007 graduate of Italy High School.

Donations can be made at any Citizens National Bank branch to the account for the Shelley Nance Memorial Art Scholarship.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed year-round to assist with the maintenance of the Lake Bardwell Multi Use Trails.

The trails encompass 26 miles around the lake, located on U.S. Corps of Engineers property. Accessed at Waxahachie Creek Park, the trails are available to horseback riders, hikers and mountain bike riders. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. Use fee is $3 per vehicle.

Volunteer firemen needed

The Ferris Volunteer Fire Department is looking for people who would like to volunteer a few hours a week to serve the community.
