Chautauqua Assembly Sept. 24
The Waxahachie Chautauqua Preservation Society will hold its annual Chautauqua Assembly on Sept. 24. The opening ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the traditional ringing of the assembly bell.
The assembly program activities will take place in the Chautauqua Auditorium located in Getzendaner Park and is open to the general public. The theme for the Assembly is “Oil and Gas In Our Region. The program will include a presentation by Dr. Tommy Stringer, vice president for Institutional Advancement and director of Navarro College Foundation, who will present a short history of oil and gas in the Navarro/Ellis county area.
In addition, there will be several speakers from Texas Christian University addressing the geology of Ellis and surrounding counties including the Barnett Shale gas field. A panel discussion will be held after the speakers conclude their presentations.
Music will be provided by the Waxahachie Jazz Band and will conclude with an evening performance by the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Jazz Band.
The Waxahachie Community Theater will present a short melodrama “Mischief in the Magnolias” at 4:30 p.m.
Admission to the melodrama is $5 and is included with an all-day ticket for the Chautauqua Assembly, which can be purchased at the door for $20.

Fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital at Chili’s tonight
Members of the Waxahachie Firefighters Association will serve meals to customers at Chili’s Restaurant on Sept. 15 and 18. Firefighters will work off-duty in two different shifts at the restaurant to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance and no child is ever denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay. Each year, there is an average of 5,700 active patient visits at the hospitals and most are treated on an outpatient basis.
Firefighters will work the lunch shift from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. and dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 15. They will work the dinner shift from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 18. Chili’s is located at 998 W. U.S. Highway 287 Bypass in Waxahachie.

Girl Scout membership drive
Girl Scouts announce that the annual Girl Scout membership drive will take place from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at First United Methodist Church, 505 W. Marvin Ave. in Waxahachie. Retired school personnel group to meet
The South Dallas County Retired School Personnel will hold its first meeting of the 2011-2012 year Sept. 21 in the DeSoto Belt Line Conference Center, 210 E. Belt Line, at 10 a.m.
The speaker will be Tim Miles from AMBA.
Photo scavenger hunt at Sims Library
Nicholas P. Sims Library’s Teen Inc. is taking a walking field trip to the downtown square for a photo scavenger hunt from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21. Teens will take pictures from a prepared list. Bring a camera or cell phone with a camera. Participants must have a permission slip signed by a parent before event.
Blood drive to benefit council member
A blood drive will be held at Ovilla City Hall from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, with all blood collected to be credited to the name of Michael Dickey, Ovilla City Council member, Place 2. Dickey was involved in a motorcycle accident Sept. 8 and remains hospitalized in serious condition at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Friends of NRA banquet and auction
The Ellis County Friends of NRA will hold its banquet and auction Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Waxahachie Civic Center, 2000 Civic Center Lane in Waxahachie. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner tickets may be purchased for $30 per person or $100 Big Shooter package – includes $30 dinners ticket, $200 worth of raffle tickets and a chance to win a Remington 1911 .45 caliber ACP pistol. Deadline to purchase Big Shooter package is Sept. 15.

Carnival at Sims Library
Nicholas P. Sims Library’s annual end of summer reading carnival will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 24. The carnival is sponsored by the Friends of Sims Library and is a wonderful celebration of reading that includes games and prizes for participants of the Texas Reading Club’s summer reading program. Participants receive carnival tickets to be utilized at the event and reading certificates for their accomplishments. This program is an outside event presented on the front lawn of the library as part of the Sims Library’s Texas Reading Club events. ‘Mischief in the Magnolias’ at WCT
As part of the 2011 Chautauqua Assembly activities, the Waxahachie Community Theatre will present “Mischief in the Magnolias” starring Gary Clark as Colonel Beauregard “Lucky” Sweetwater and Sara Craig as his late wife, Merry May. (She’s not dead – just never on time!) The show also features Jessica Price as the attractive but socially awkward daughter, Truly Sweetwater, Brian Caudell as Slim Chance, and Jonathan Ivey as Hadley A. Heartburne.
This single-performance melodrama will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Chautauqua Auditorium in Waxahachie. Teen Advisory Board at Sims Library
Nicholas P. Sims Library’s Teen Advisory Board will meet from 4:15-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. The board allows teens to have a voice in teen services at the library.
“You will be able to tell us what books, videos, CDs you would like to see at the library and help plan teen programs. We want to know what you are interested in. Come join us for pizza at 5:45 in the meeting room,” a spokesman said.
