Waxahachie Head Start roundup

Waxahachie ISD will hold its Head Start roundup for the 2008-2009 school year from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, April 17, and from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, April 18. Head Start is for 4-year-olds and is taught at Dunaway Elementary. “Your child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008,” a spokesman said. “Your family must be income eligible and must provide proof of income. Non-English speaking children and or children with disabilities are welcomed in the Head Start Program.”

Girl Scout ice cream social

Local Girl Scouts will hold an ice cream social from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Chapman Park scout hut on Brown St. A troop is forming and girls are invited to join for a $10 membership fee.

Weight Watchers

Beginning March 31, Weight Watchers will no longer have its weekly meetings at Ferris Avenue Baptist Church.

The new location will be New Life Worship Center, 1320 Brown St. The schedule will remain the same.

Charity Day occurs twice a year at Belk, located at 1540 N. U.S. Highway 77, Waxahachie. The next Charity Day is from 6-10 a.m. May 3.

Early voting for the runoff election

Early voting will run from Monday-Friday, March 31-April 4, for the Democratic and Republican runoff elections. Early voting takes place from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Ellis County Elections Office, 106 S. Monroe St. The last day to apply for a ballot by mail (received not postmarked) is April 1.

The runoff election itself is Tuesday, April 8.

Scholarship deadline

Ellis Hill Association of Realtors will award two $1,500 scholarships through its Fred N. Stones Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships will be awarded to qualified High School seniors who are graduating from schools located in Ellis or Hill counties and are pursuing a business major or real estate-related career.

Special Olympics

Texas Trash-Off Day

The city of Glenn Heights will participate in Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, April 5.

A trash collection will be held at 2118 S. Uhl Road. Residents can drop off items at the municipal services area to include trash, brush, batteries, tires and metal. Also, a sensitive document shredder will be made available for this one-day event.

Alzheimer’s Association program

The community is invited to attend an informative program by Amy Durham, regional representative for the Alzheimer’s Association, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Pleasant Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center.

The program will cover “the ways, the wisdom and the means of legal planning for people with memory loss,” a spokesman said.

Free caregivers class

The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Dallas chapter will hold a class for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Baylorworx, 507 N. U.S. Highway 77, Waxahachie. The class will provide information, guidance and training to assist them in caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease.

The class will address an overview of Alzheimer’s disease, meeting daily challenges, communication, safety, managing difficult behavior and caring for the caregiver. The class is free for family caregivers. Lunch and beverages are provided.

Career expo

Antique Alley and Yard Sale

The 18th annual Antique Alley and Yard Sale will be held April 18-20.

Since 1999, this country-shopping extravaganza is held for miles via Farm-to-Market 4 South from Cleburne and throughout several communities.

“It's not just one event or show,” a spokesman said. “A wide variety of independent show promoters, local businesses, individuals and civic organizations lease booth spaces to hundreds of dealers from several states.

“Along the route there will be special shows, shop sales, yard sales and fund-raisers,” the spokesman said. “Hundreds of dealer booths will include antiques, collectibles, arts, crafts, a great variety of food, gardening, home decor, nostalgic items, jewelry and more. Vendor booth spaces are still available.”

Earth Day costume contest

Pettigrew Montessori Academy will hold a costume contest for ages 4-12 in conjunction with a free Earth Day celebration for children from 10 a.m.-noon April 19. Judging will be at 11 a.m. at 806 E. Garden swap in Ovilla

Ellis County gardeners are invited to a garden swap from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 19 at Ovilla City Park.

Gardeners are asked to bring surplus plants, seeds, rooted cuttings, extra gardening supplies, tools and art to trade with other gardeners. Participants can also share experiences, expertise and tips for gardening in the area.

Folding chairs, garden carts and folding tables are suggested.

Aggie muster

Scholarships available

Ellis County Master Gardeners are taking applications for their annual scholarship program.

Several scholarships of from $500 to $1,000 are available to graduating Ellis County seniors. The scholarships are funded in part by the Master Gardener Lawn and Garden Expo and are for students interested in horticulture-related fields.

Forms are available on the Master Gardener Web site at www.ecmga.com and at the county extension office at 701 Interstate 35E, Suite No. 3, Waxahachie, as well as from high school agricultural departments and teachers. Related disciplines include biology, botany, entomology, chemistry, genetics, communications, crop nutrition, ag economics, business and other fields. The deadline for consideration is May 1.

Aggie golf tournament

Sponsors and players are needed for the fourth annual Ellis A&M Aggie Club Golf Tournament to be held at Country View Golf Course in Lancaster on Friday, May 2. The tournament will be a four-person scramble format at $100 per person. Proceeds support the scholarship fund.
