Ellis County veterans on DVD
Nicholas P. Sims Library is filming conversations with Ellis County wartime veterans for the library DVD reference collection to share with future generations. Any veterans interested in participating is asked to contact the library at 972-937-2671 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Education Committee of the Ellis County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a dog-behavior class, “Why does my dog do that and what can I do about it?” from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at First United Methodist Church of Red Oak, 400 W. Red Oak Road in Red Oak.
This class is for humans only; the instructor will have a dog to demonstrate some training techniques and dog behavior.
The class is free, but donations toward the programs of the Education Committee will be accepted.

Downtown Farmers Market
The Waxahachie Downtown Farmers Market will open to the public at 8 a.m. May 30, with booths open until 1 p.m. Vendors will have on hand different types of produce in all shapes, sizes and colors. In addition to produce, vendors also will sell such food-related items as canned preserves, jellies, jams and salsas.
The Master Gardeners will have an information booth with representatives on hand to answer questions.

TexShare Databases computer class
Nicholas P. Sims Library will offer a new advanced computer class on the TexShare Databases from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 30. This is an advanced level class examining the TexShare Databases available at Sims Library. Students must either have completed the beginner and intermediate level computer classes or have equivalent computer experience to register.
Sims Library offers free computer classes every month that are open to registration for anyone who has a library card. Pre-registration is required for the class, which will be held in the reference room on the basement level of the library. Call 972-937-2671 or stop by the library to register for the classes.
County Seat BBQ Cook-off and Washer Tournament
The first County Seat BBQ Cook-off and Washer Tournament will be held May 30 at the Ellis County Expo Center in Waxahachie. The event will benefit the Texas Traveler’s 14U girls fast-pitch softball team of Ellis County.
The cook-off will feature brisket, pork spare ribs, half-chicken and jackpot beans as sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society. The entry fee is $75 one or all plus one cooked brisket and $10 jackpot beans.
Check in is from noon-1 p.m. for the washer tournament, with boards and washers provided. Entry fee is $25 per team.
Live entertainment will be provided by Dakota Butler (1 p.m.), Southern Chance (2 p.m.), Dallahachie Boys (5 p.m.) and White Noise Band (7 p.m.).
Concessions will be available. Admission is $5, with children age 12 and younger $3.

Fundraiser at Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A in Waxahachie will host a fundraiser and send-off party at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, in support of Texas Fallen Heroes and its founder and chairman, Walter Coleman, as he embarks on a walk across the state of Texas in support of U.S. military personnel who have been killed in action.
The goal of Texas Fallen Heroes is to create a monument in Texas to honor American military personnel who gave their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The restaurant will donate $1 per customer the day of the fundraiser. Members of the Patriot Riders, Ellis County Honor Flight, the National Guard and the Waxahachie police and fire departments will be present.

Sims volunteers needed

Special education records to be destroyed
The Texas Education Agency requires that school districts maintain special education eligibility folders on previous students for a period of seven years after the student either graduates or no longer qualifies for special education services.
The Red Oak ISD special education office will begin destroying records/folders June 5 for the 2001-2002 school year. If any former student or parent of a former student would like to obtain information, call the special education office at 972-617-5895.
Bake sale to benefit peewee cheerleaders
The cheer teams from Tejas and Little Indians, of Waxahachie Cheerleading, will host a fundraising bake sale at Oma’s Jiffy Burger, 403 Water St., from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 5-6.
Navarro College will host its GED graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Dawson Auditorium on the Corsicana campus.

North Texas Lake Rally
The North Texas Lake Rally for scooters is set for Friday-Sunday, June 12-14, at Lake Waxahachie. Friday's activities include camp setup, pool party and ice cream social. Saturday's activities include breakfast, country ride or historic guided city tour, scooter show, live show with the Joel Sprayberry Band and free dinner and happy hour at Courtside Bar and Grill. Prepay is $30 or pay $35 at the event.

DFW Summer Balloon Classic
The DFW Summer Balloon Classic returns to Midway Regional Airport from June 19-21 with more than 40 hot air balloons and more.
The event kicks off from 4-8 p.m. Friday, continuing from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday and featuring the Energizer Hot Hare, Propane Exception Energy, Curves, Re/Max and United Van Lines balloons among others.
Between the morning and evening hot air balloon activities, the extravaganza will feature gliders, skydivers, helicopters, a variety of airplanes, military aircraft, Commemorative Air Force, powered parachutes, radio control aircraft, kites and more, in static displays, demonstrations and flyovers. Some flights will be available to the public. There also will be food concessions, exhibits, displays and more.
The event is free to the public with a $10 parking fee. No ice chests and no pets are allowed.
