Donations needed

The Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center is getting ready for its annual garage sale fundraiser. Furniture, household goods, toys and children's clothing are needed to make the sale a success. Tax-deductible donations are now being accepted. Drop off donations at the center, which is located at 219 Patrick St., from 8 a.m.-noon weekdays.  Pickup for large items can be arranged for city residents by calling 972-937-8271.

Garage sale

Waxahachie chapter 599 Order Eastern Star will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at 303 John Arden in Waxahachie. There will be clothing, furniture and household items.  

There will also be barbeque lunch from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The cost is $6 per person.

Open house

The Gingerbread House children’s advocacy center will hold an open house in recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29.

The Waxahachie Mother's Club is sponsoring the lunch again this year.

Food drive

JCPenney in Waxahachie is holding a canned food drive through Sunday, May 4. Donations will go to local churches and food banks. Drop boxes are located at the front of the store for non-perishable items.


Ellis County Master Gardeners are taking applications for their annual scholarship program. Several scholarships of from $500 to $1,000 are available to graduating Ellis County seniors. Forms are available on the Master Gardener Web site at and at the county extension office at 701 Interstate 35E, Suite No. 3, Waxahachie, as well as from high school ag departments and teachers. The deadline is May 1.

Aggie golf


Sponsors and players are needed for the fourth annual Ellis A&M Aggie Club Golf Tournament to be held at Country View Golf Course in Lancaster on Friday, May 2. The tournament will be a four-person scramble format at $100 per person. Proceeds support the scholarship fund.

Community-wide garage sale

Waxahachie High School is hosting a community-wide garage sale May 3 to raise money for its Sunshine Fund.

The fund is used to assist students experiencing financial aid or need.

The school is leasing spaces at the football stadium for $10 to the community.

“You can bring all of your garage sale items to one location instead of having strangers in your home,” a spokesman said. “We plan to make this a family event by providing a kid’s area, bounce house, face painting and, of course, concessions.”

May 3 concert to aid Relay

As part of fundraising for this year’s Relay for Life, John David Dodd has put together “An Evening of Bluegrass” beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Midlothian Civic Center, next to the Dairy Queen on U.S. Highway 287. Groups scheduled to play are Ellis County Bluegrass, The Texas Prairie Band, Bluefield Express and the Midlothian Bus Barn Band. Concessions will be available, as well as a barbecue dinner. Admission and food will be by donation only to the Relay for Life.

WHS alumni jazz concert

All Waxahachie High School jazz band alumni are invited to  participate in the annual alumni jazz concert Thursday-Friday, May 15-16, at the band hall.

“This year will be slightly different from years past as we ask that any former WHS Jazz Band member make their way back to the high school for a really special night of outstanding music,” said Rich Armstrong, director of Waxahachie ISD bands.

Rehearsals for the concert will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday afternoon, with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

“We are inviting any and all WHS Jazz Band Alumni to join us,” Armstrong said. “This will be an opportunity for us to have one of the largest and most talented group of musicians on the stage simultaneously … and, you know, this just might be the ultimate jam session.”

Waxahachie Preparatory Academy

Waxahachie Preparatory Academy will hold informational meetings on its university-model school at 7 p.m. May 22, June 26 and July 10.

“Are you interested in being more involved in your child’s education? Are you interested in your child being taught from a biblical world view? Come and learn more about our university-model school,” a spokesman said.

Plein air event

The Ellis County Art Association will host its annual Paint Historic Waxahachie event from May 30-June 8. More than 30 landscape artists will paint on location for the 10-day period. Artists compete for prizes. An exhibition and sale are held June 7-8.
