Rain barrel class offered
The city of Waxahachie’s Parks and Recreation Department is holding a class on how to construct a rain barrel. The cost is $30 per person. All materials are provided and each participant takes home a completed rain barrel. The deadline to register is July 31 or until class is filled. Space is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Downtown movie night
The city of Waxahachie will host a downtown movie night Friday, Aug. 7, by the pocket park across from the Ellis County Courthouse.
“Journey to the Center of the Earth” will be screened. This is a 3-D movie and glasses will be available for the first 200 people.
Sims Library offers computer confidence class
Nicholas P. Sims Library will offer a computer confidence class on from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 8. This is an intermediate level class for those who would like to explore and refresh their computer skills in various Microsoft programs.
The library offers free computer classes every month. The computer class is open to registration for anyone who has a library card at the library. Pre-registration is required for the class and will be held in the reference room on the basement level of the library.

Master Gardeners grilling festival
The Ellis County Master Gardeners will host a grilling festival at the Waxahachie Downtown Farmers Market on the courthouse square Saturday, Aug. 15. The grilling will be done courtesy of Mark Arnold, Ellis County AgriLife Extension agent. The fruits and vegetables will be donated by the farmers market vendors and the Master Gardeners. Grilled fruits and vegetables will be served from 9-11 a.m. or until they are gone, free of charge to all farmers market attendees.
Benefit concert set for Aug. 15
The PitPops, a nine-piece oldies rock band from the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, will be featured at a fundraiser for Ellis County Habitat for Humanity on Aug. 15 at the Waxahachie Civic Center.
The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for single tickets. A table of eight can be purchased online-only for $105.
There will be a cash bar and concessions available as well as a large dance floor.

Community Dance and Gymnastics Day
GO! Dance and Gymnastics Studio will host free dance and gymnastics classes to everyone in the Ellis County community.
Each class session will be one hour per age group. The class will be divided into two sections: 30 minutes of dance and 30 minutes of gymnastics. Everyone ages 3-20 is welcome to come and participate. A guardian must be present at time of registration.
Drop-ins are OK, but a call ahead to reserve a spot is preferred. Ages 3-6 is from 1-2 p.m.; ages 7-9 is from 2-3 p.m.; ages 10-13 is from 3-4 p.m.; ages 14-20 is from 3-4 p.m.
The event is set for Aug. 22 at the studio, located at 1301 S. Kaufman St., Ennis.

Sims Library offers TexShare computer classes
Nicholas P. Sims Library will offer a new advanced computer class on the TexShare databases from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 29. This is an advanced level class examining the TexShare databases available at the library. Glenn Heights Family Festival
The Glenn Heights Family Festival will be a three-day event from Sept. 10-12 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the city’s founding.
The first day will take place from 3-10 p.m. in conjunction with Glenn Heights Family Night Out. On Sept. 11, the event activities will run from 3 p.m.-midnight. Firefighters, police, members of the armed forces, paramedics and emergency medical technicians in conjunction with Patriot Day will be recognized. Founder’s Day will be celebrated as part of a citywide celebration from 10 a.m.-midnight Sept. 12. People who helped to found the city and city staff will be recognized in a ceremony.
Each day there will be events for the whole family to participate in that include a rock climbing wall, a traveling educational natural show, a carnival, arts and crafts live music featuring a jazz band and fireworks. Food vendors also will be on site.
