Belk Department Store in Waxahachie invites schools and other nonprofit organizations to participate in its semi-annual Belk Charity Sale from 6-10 a.m. Saturday, April 16.

The four-hour shopping event provides an excellent fundraising tool for participating organizations and an opportunity for customers to support local charities while taking advantage of special discounts on purchases during the event.

“Last fall was our biggest Charity Sale day to date with 31 charities. Local charities raised around $40,000 just in our area,” said Angela Faseler, area sales manager.

Belk Charity Sale tickets are available now to participating nonprofit organizations for sale in advance of the event. One hundred percent of the proceeds from each $5 ticket sold will be retained by the local charity. There is no limit to the number of tickets charities can sell or to the amount of money they can raise. Belk will provide tickets and informational materials at no cost to each participating organization.

Beginning Friday, April 8, tickets may also be purchased at Belk stores with all revenues from in-store ticket sales equally divided among participating charities and schools in each local store.

“So far we have 17 charities signed up. Any school, church, PTO or other nonprofit organizations are eligible to participate. It is such a great fundraiser. There is nothing to deliver, no merchandise to handle. Just sell the tickets and keep the $5 sale price,” Faseler said. “We would like to thank the community for their past support. Here at Belk, we believe in giving back to the community that supports us.”

On the morning of the Belk Charity Sale, the first 100 customers in each store will receive free Belk gift cards ranging in value from $5 to $100 and a chance to win one of three $1,000 Belk gift cards being awarded company-wide. Also, participating charities and schools will be registered to win one of three $1,000 donations from Belk in a company-wide drawing.

Charity representatives interested in taking part in this one-of-a-kind fundraising event should contact their local Belk store manager for more information. To participate in the Belk Charity Sale, organizations must have a 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service.

In 2010, Belk’s Charity Sale company-wide raised more than $9.5 million for hundreds of participating charitable organizations.

Belk Inc. was founded in 1888 in Monroe, N.C. Belk is privately owned and has more than 300 stores in 16 states. Three brothers, who are third-generation descendants of the founder, continue to oversee corporate operations, Faseler said.
