Thelma (McCarty) Stewart, 85, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, after a long struggle with dementia. Thelma was born on Aug. 18, 1928 to James and Eula McCarty in Houston. On Dec. 28, 1950, Thelma married the love of her life, Neely Reginald Stewart. Although she only worked outside the home for brief periods of time, she had plenty of things to keep her busy. She loved working in the yard, cooking, sewing and cleaning. They had three children which were Thelma’s life.
Thelma is survived by her children: Kathy Downs and husband, Rickey, Reggie Stewart and wife, Teri and Tommy Stewart and wife, Donna; grandchildren: Rickey Downs, Jr., Cheryl (Downs) Garcia, David Downs, Amber (Stewart) Huckabee, Robin (Stewart) Cain, Teffennee Harrison, Parker Harrison, Thomas (TJ) Stewart and Scott Stewart; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings: Jean Parker and husband, Keith, Ray McCarty and wife, Roxie as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reginald Stewart; parents, James and Eula McCarty; brothers, Walter, Jessie and Wilburn McCarty; and sisters, Helen and Patsy McCarty.
A visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 and services to honor her life are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 at Midlothian Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery.
