The Waxahachie soccer teams are set to begin their season this afternoon as both the boys and girls will play hosts to eight-team tournaments.

Each team will play once today, Friday and Saturday for its first three games of the season.

The Waxahachie women will start its tournament run against Quinlan at 1 p.m. at Lumpkins Stadium. It will be the first game of the day at the stadium. The Lady Panthers are coming off a tough season that saw them score just twice in district play.

Waxahachie returns reigning district MVP Tierney Thomison, who scored at least twice in four different district games. The team also has a new scoring threat in freshman Ariana Acosta. The speedster will get her first taste of varsity action in this game.

The boys’ team will take the pitch immediately after that game and it will face Mabank. The Panthers also had a tough season last year as it failed to reach the playoffs.

This will be a great chance for several new faces on the Indians to get some experience early in the year. Look for Zach Richardson, Isiah Parrish and Braden Henry to be impact players with their speed. Waxahachie will also be breaking in a new goalie, Miguel Munoz. He was on the team last year, but will get the opportunity to start opening day this year.

Should both Waxahachie teams get wins, as expected, they will get to play all of their tournament games at Lumpkins Stadium. Should either team lose, it will be finish the tournament at Wilemon’s field.

The Lady Indians are the favorite to win their bracket, but will have to get through Mansfield Summit and Mesquite Poteet.

The boys’ draw is difficult with teams from Crowley, Seagoville, North Dallas and Pearland Dawson that all have playoff experience.
