The Howard and Finley Warriors seventh- and eighth-grade football teams opened the season against each other. All four games were played well by both teams. Howard was able to win three of the four games this week.
On Monday night, the Howard seventh-grade “B” team beat Finley 33-13. Players that played well were for Howard were Evan Taylor, Raul Mendoza, Clayton Knight, Bry Donalson and the entire offensive line.
Safety Jett Teakell, linebackers Chris Tryon and Clayton Brown and defensive lineman AJ Keele had strong tackles to lead Finley. Running back Jose Andrande had two long touchdown runs.
Howard seventh-grade “A” team beat Finley 33-0. Players that stood out for Howard were Buddy Gardner, Jakob Herrell, William Powell, Jordan Fay, Keshawn Anderson and Austin Mick.
Finley got strong defensive performances from Austin Gallagher, Angel Perez, Layne Clendenen, Joseph Burk and Hunter Helms.
The Finley eighth-grade “B” defense performed well as it won 35-6. Linebacker Anthony Martinez led the special teams with tackles on kickoffs for Finley. Defensive end Nathan Jones played well, defensive end Ryan Allen had a fourth down sack, cornerback Josue Balderas had an interception and defensive end Raphael Gress recovered a fumble to lead the Finley defense. Running back Gabriel Alexander had 65- and two-yard touchdown runs. Running back Anthony Martinez had 80-, 35- and five-yard touchdown runs and a 52-yard kickoff return.
Players that stood out for Howard were Trevor Mott, Parker Stephenson and Rodrigo Mendoza.
The eighth grade “A” team beat Finley 26-0. Players that stood out for Howard were Caleb High, Trey Cooks, Quad’tavius Donalson, Tanner Gattin and the entire offensive line.
Finley was led by defensive end Jacob Aleman, defensive lineman Juan Casas, linbacker Jarvis McCray, linebacker Gabriel Kubankin and defensive lineman Jonathon Perez. Perez had a forced fumble, which defensive end Cameron Martin recovered. Running backs Gabriel Kubankin and running back Martin played well for the offense.
Next week the Howard Warriors will play the Lancaster Tigers. The seventh-grade will play at home at Wilemon Field. The “B” team plays at 5:30 p.m. and the “A” team plays at 7 p.m. The eighth-grade teams will play in Lancaster at Old Tiger Stadium. The “B” teams play at 5:30 p.m. and the “A” teams at 7 p.m.
Finley’s next games will be Monday and Tuesday against Forney Warren. The seventh-grade teams play on Monday in Forney, the eighth-grade teams play Tuesday at Wilemon.
