The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office has received a complaint from a Maypearl resident who reported a phone call from an unknown male subject claiming to be her grandson.
The male subject told the woman that he had been in an accident and was arrested for DWI. He said the people he had hit told him they wouldn’t press charges if he gave them $1,500.
The woman told deputies that she knew it wasn’t her grandson.
She said she told the male subject she would be on her way to the jail. The male subject then told her not to go to the jail but to meet him elsewhere.
Recognizing that it was a scam, the woman said she then hung up the phone.
The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is making people aware of this scam and reminding them to always verify the identity of any caller who calls up with a story about needing money.
