Nov. 19, 1924 –

Aug. 21, 2013

Geraldine “Jerrie” Carmichael Nelson, 88, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21. Jerrie was born Nov. 19, 1924 in Des Arc, Ark. to L.E. and Mary Carmichael. Jerrie Nelson passed away quietly at her home near Waxahachie, with her loving family at her side.

She spent her early childhood living with her paternal grandmother on the farm near Cabot, Ark. Later she enrolled in Mount St. Mary Catholic Academy in Little Rock, where she completed her primary education.

Jerrie had four great loves: family, church, caring for others, and travel. She loved all to the fullest. Jerrie was devoted to her family and her true love, Ralph. Home and family were Jerrie’s breath of life. Summer meant the kids were out of school so there was time to play games together, and she never grew tired of dancing with Ralph, whether ballroom dance or competition square dancing.

To say Jerrie was passionate about her church falls short. While leading and teaching Bible Study classes, she directed hundreds of dramas between First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach, in San Diego, and Park Meadows Baptist in Waxahachie, including producing, writing, and directing “The Life of Christ in Living Pictures.”

Jerrie’s compassion for others culminated in her licensure as a registered nurse while raising four children and served as an R.N. for over 15 years, most notably enjoying Labor and Delivery where she would rock each baby to sleep in the nursery.

An insatiable thirst for experiencing new things and other cultures inspired Jerrie and Ralph to travel to 34 countries, six continents and 48 states.

She is preceded in death by her son George Michael Nelson and her mother and father.

Jerrie is survived by her husband Ralph Nelson, her children: Dennis Nelson, and wife Linda, of Coto de Caza, Calif.; Robin Nelson and wife Nancy, of Waxahachie; and J. Lynn and Diane Nelson of Rancho San Diego, Calif.; Grandchildren: Brandon and Michelle Nelson of Yorba Linda, Calif.; Braden Nelson of Tustin, Calif.; Brooke and John Krockman of Orange, Calif.; Heidi and Jim Wood, of Placentia, Calif.; Sari Nelson  and Rolf Nelson of Waxahachie; great-grandchildren: Ashley and Adam Nelson (Brandon); Alex, Jack Riley, and Dillon Ray Wood (Heidi); Jack, Ben, Sam, Nick, and A.J. Krockman (Brooke).

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25 at Park Meadows Baptist Church, 3350 U.S. Highway 77 in Waxahachie.
