AUSTIN, Texas – Earlier this weekend, Attorney General Greg Abbott thanked a supporter for saying that Abbott would beat Senator Wendy Davis in a gubernatorial race and that he would teach, “Retard Barbie to learn a life lesson.”

This evening, Abbott responded to the public uproar by tweeting: “I thank supporters on Twitter, but I don’t endorse anyone’s offensive language.”

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement to Abbott’s remark:

“Greg Abbott stated appreciation for a tweet that insults women and the mentally disabled, and now doesn’t even have the decency to apologize? Hate and discrimination have no place in our public discourse. Greg Abbott highlighted such hateful language on Twitter, and now needs to apologize to the people of Texas. This offensive behavior is the opposite of ‘positive,’ and is exactly why Texans deserve someone better than Abbott as our next governor.”
