A press release issued Thursday by the Waxahachie High School Ex-Students Association listing this year’s class of Athletic hall of Fame inductees inadvertently contained the incorrect biography for inductee Tirey C. Wilemon Jr.
The release was published as submitted in Friday’s edition of the Daily Light.
The association has issued an apology for the mistake, noting that Wilemon’s father, Tirey C. Wilemon Sr., was also nominated for Hall of Fame honors in this year’s class in the “Friend” category for his contributions to sports initiatives for WISD, which contributed to the mix-up in the final release.
The correct biography for Tirey C. Wilemon Jr. is published below.
Tirey C. Wilemon Jr. (WHS Class of 1956) excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track and field.
In 1955, Wilemon was a High School All American with 1,690 yards rushing in 10 games, averaging 8.4 yards per carry. He was also 1955 First Team All-District, First Team All-State and named WHS Most Valuable Player.
From 1956 through 1960, Wilemon was a member of the SMU football team and served as running back, receiver and defensive safety. In 1958, he was part of the Dallas Morning News All-Southwest Conference Selection, and the Association Press Honorable Mention All American Team.
