Hill College, which is always good competition, visits Waxahachie for a preseason scrimmage Aug. 20.
The Rebels will take on the Southwestern Assemblies of God University womenís and menís soccer teams at 1 and 3 p.m. that day on the Lionsí home pitch. Fans can get an early glimpse of the SAGU teams that afternoon for free.†
It will be their only chance to see the team for a while since the Lionsí first four games this season are on the road.
SAGU will not play again at home until Sept. 9, when they entertain Dallas Christian College in a match that will be aired by SAGU Sports Live. The pre-game show starts at approximately 12:45 p.m.
The Lions, 7-11-0 last fall, have a young cast this year. Head coach Clementin Oancea has to fill the void of losing both his top scorer and defender to graduation. Skill on the frontline and at midfield, along with a vocal leader at goalie, are strengths heading in the season.
Questions on defense will demand answers if the team is to contend in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Head coach Mandy Fortnerís unit may be greener than their male comrades. The Lady Lions, who began playing in 2006, had their best campaign in 2012 when they posted a 6-11-1 mark. The Lady Lions won five of their last nine matches.
Fortnerís troops have a dozen returning players and what appears to be a good incoming haul of 14 players. They have improved steadily on defense and in midfield. The squad could use a bonafide scorer or a set-up artist.
The Hill College campus is in Hillsboro, just 34 miles north of Waco. The Rebels are well-coached under Paul Davenport, who has both teams under his direction.
By going 9-6-1 last year, his men won the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC).
The red-and-white striped squad had a stifling defense that enabled the Rebels to produce another strong season.
All four of their setbacks came against two foes; Northeast Texas Community College and Western Texas College.
The Lady Rebels, 12-3-1 in 2012, will take on the SAGU womenís team prior to the menís contest.†
