I can’t believe how fast time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I started training with Renee Byrd. However, it has been six months, and the most amazing six months I’ve had in a long time. We’ve worked together to make me a healthier, more fit individual, and it has been a blast making that happen.
In fact, Byrd and I were talking just the other day about how much fun we’ve had working together this year. As we thought back to some of the most memorable moments we’ve shared, several scenarios and situations came to our minds.
There was the time that my knee swelled to the size of a grapefruit and I had to make a visit to the orthopedist. We weren’t exactly sure what was wrong with my knee, but we knew something wasn’t right. After X-rays and an examination, the doctor surmised that my knee had become inflamed due to an old injury. He said that I could have a cortisone shot or take medicine by mouth. The advantage of the shot is that it takes effect right away. The pills would take a while to kick in. Well, that was a no- brainer.
As I sat there with my right leg draped across his legs, he pulled out one of the biggest needles I had ever seen in my life. Byrd was sitting in a chair next to me, and when she saw the look on my face her response was, “Just look at me, Mel. Everything is going fine.” Right about that time, he took the needle and just jabbed it into my knee. There was no warning, just wham, right into the knee. I think I turned all shades of gray and I broke into a cold sweat. It was so unreal that it even took Byrd by surprise. And while I made a quick recovery, that moment is forever etched in my memory.
For Byrd, the most memorable moment was the time I brought a sugar filled drink to her house when we were filming one of our videos. It was one of our very first videos, and I had not taken a lunch break yet. So I drove through a fast food drive-thru and grabbed a grilled chicken wrap and the drink. Not thinking, I drove directly to Byrd’s house ready to shoot our video. As we’re sitting in the back yard filming, Byrd reaches over and takes the cup from my hand and places it on the ground (never skipping a beat). Once she completed her thought, she looked over at me and said, “I can’t believe you had a soft drink cup in our fitness video, Mel. We’re talking about healthy living and you’re sitting there drinking a cup of sugar.” Needless to say, that has never happened again.
Byrd and I have had an exceptional year together, taking Ellis County by storm. But there is still much more to do. We’re not exactly sure what 2013 holds for us, but we know it’s going to be just as amazing as the last half of this year.
