Melissa Jenkins, 44, of Rice, Texas was struck and killed by a 2008 Toyota Tundra early Monday evening while walking south along the I-45 access road between Alma and Rice.

Justice of the Peace for Precinct 2 Jackie Miller pronounced the victim dead at 6:47 p.m. at the scene.

“Apparently the victim and her friend had vehicle problems and were walking south on the access road toward Rice. She was walking in the roadway wearing a black jacket,” Miller said. “It appears she was killed instantly. It was a true accident. It was pitch black and both pedestrians were wearing dark clothing. She was struck from behind. I feel the cause of death is multiple blunt force traumas. Her body was sent to the medical examiner.”

The Department of Public Safety and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department along with Alma first responders worked the scene.

Miller indicated that alcohol was not involved in the accident.
