The Waxahachie Firefighters Association is lending a hand to make this holiday season a little brighter for emergency responders who were affected Hurricane Sandy.
The association collected gift cards for firefighters, retired firefighters and their families. The cards are now on the way to New York to be delivered.
“We got involved with the Friends of Firefighters. It is an organization that was created after Sept. 11. This organization was created to help New York firefighters recover from that,” Association President Don Alexander said. “Since then they have been active in the community in helping firefighters and retired firefighters overcome different tragedies.”
Alexander said since the hurricane hit New York the association has been looking for a way to help out some of these families. One way they were looking into lending a hand was to possibly adopt some to these families for the holiday season.
After contacting the state and international firefighters associations Alexander was connected with the Friends of Firefighters organization, which was doing a gift card drive for emergency responders and was a way for the association to help. During the departments annual Christmas party held Dec. 8 firefighters were able collect around $500 in gift cards.
Alexander said was pleased by the response and wants to encourage others to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Friends of Firefighters has several ways that the public can help through its website, www.friendsoffirefighters.org.
