Ariel Hsing's getting mentions on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter. And some are using the 16-year-old American's near-victory over Li Xiaoxia to take shots at the Chinese government and its state-funded athletes.

A small sample.

From someone with the handle Big Sea: "The U.S. government does not have to spend tax dollars on her, but those who are trained by the (Chinese) government have spent so much taxpayers' money."

From Li Long: "She can apply to Stanford on her own merit. The Chinese champions probably cannot."

From Wuyintinglin: "She is formidable. Remember she is an amateur player."

Hsing was born in California to parents who emigrated from Taiwan and China.
